For the last seven years, my grandmother has lived with me and my husband. She has been an integral part of our lives and has been there every step of the way as my son has grown up.
But in recent years, there are fewer and fewer things they can do together. As he’s gotten older, his interests have become more active and my grandmother, who has arthritis, can’t keep up like she used to.
We are so excited to partner with the Arthritis Foundation to share a simple craft idea with modifications for those affected by arthritis. This fun activity features arthritis-friendly steps so that those of all ages and abilities can get in on the fun.
Let’s chat about arthritis for a minute. The Arthritis Foundation is leading the fight for the arthritis community, helping conquer everyday battles through life-changing information and resources, access to optimal care, advancements in science and community connections.
Here are some statistics about arthritis that may surprise you:
- More than 54 million Americans have arthritis.
- One in four Americans, including nearly 300,000 children, have arthritis.
- Arthritis is the #1 leading cause of disability among adults in the U.S.
- More kids and adults are living with arthritis in America than those with breast cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and autism combined.
- There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related diseases.
- Arthritis isn’t just an “elderly disease.” Two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65, including 300,000 children.
So what can we do to help those affected by this disease? That’s what the Arthritis Foundation is working on. They’ve launched Live Yes! INSIGHTS, which is going to change the future of arthritis forever.
They are asking those affected by arthritis to take a 10-minute assessment where they will share their overall arthritis experience – answering questions relating to their symptoms, pain levels and how arthritis affects their function and mobility – so the foundation can get a better sense of what people experience on a daily basis.
The data collected will show decision-makers the realities of living with arthritis – ultimately paving the way for change by breaking down barriers to care, accelerating research and creating resources that will make a difference in people’s lives.
The Live Yes! Arthritis Network offers in-person, peer led connect groups – not your typical arthritis “support groups” – that bring adults with all types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases together for fun, social and informative educational events and activities focused on mutual support and positive coping strategies for living well. There is also a Live Yes! online community with 24/7 support for adults with all types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases.
When we sat down to work on our Picture Puzzle, I knew we had to keep a few things in mind because of my grandmother’s arthritis. She doesn’t like to squeeze bottles because of the arthritis in her hands, so traditional glue was out. And scissors can be hard to navigate as well, so we came up with another solution.
Picture Puzzle Craft
Here’s what you need to complete our Picture Puzzle Craft:
- Large wooden popsicle sticks
- Printed picture
- Glue stick
- Exacto knife
- Painter’s tape
First, you’ll need to line up your craft sticks to fit beneath your photo. Larger sticks may be easier to work with for those affected by arthritis.
Use the painter’s tape to hold the sticks in place.
Cover the back of your photo with glue using the glue stick and place on top of the craft sticks. If the glue stick is too difficult to work with, try applying regular school glue to a sponge to cover the back of the photo.
Allow to dry completely.
Once it is dry, use the Exacto knife to cut along the edge of each craft stick, separating it from the group.
Now your puzzle is ready to solve!
The great part about this craft is that not only can you make it with your grandkids, but now you have a fun activity to do together! You could make puzzles of places you’ve been together, photos of each other, pictures of family members — just have fun with it!
My grandmother took the Live Yes! INSIGHTS assessment because the data collected will help make a different in the lives of people with arthritis and you can help, too. Take or share the assessment to help the Arthritis Foundation get the valuable information they need in order to change the future of those living with arthritis.
By taking part in the Live Yes! INSIGHTS assessment, you’ll be among those changing lives today and changing the future of arthritis, for yourself and for 54 million others. By sharing your experience, you’re showing decision-makers the realities of living with arthritis, paving the way for change so you can enjoy crafting once again.
